Borusan Gemlik Port eRTG Electrification Project
The rubber-tyred RTG cranes used at Borusan Lojistik’s Gemlik Port were converted from diesel-engine to grid-electric operation through the eRTG electrification project carried out by BM Makina. The VAHLE eRTG system connects to the conductor rails running along the crane runway via telescopic current-collection arms, providing uninterrupted power to the RTGs; this completely removes the constraints of refuelling, cable reels and generators.
In this project, BM Makina undertook turnkey the design of the VAHLE insulated conductor rail systems, the manufacturing of the steel support structures, the installation of the current-collection arms on the cranes and the integration of the diesel/electric hybrid control units. As a result, Borusan’s entire RTG fleet became electrically operated with no performance loss; a reduction of over 90% in diesel consumption and up to 94% in greenhouse-gas emissions was achieved.
Thanks to the electric RTG structure, the noise level at the port dropped, maintenance processes were simplified and equipment availability increased. As one of the most critical steps on the path to Borusan Gemlik Port earning its “Green Port / Eco Port” certificate, the project demonstrated BM Makina’s engineering strength in port electrification.
