BKB / ALUBKB Portable Gantry Cranes

      Frequently Asked Questions

      What is a gantry crane?

A gantry crane is a lifting system that carries its own structure on two legs, so it needs no ceiling beam, runway or building support. The load is raised by a hoist that travels along the top beam between the legs. BM Makina builds its BKB / ALUBKB portable gantry cranes in Gebze, Türkiye, on braked wheels and in a design that can be dismantled and relocated.

How does a portable gantry crane work?

The frame stands on four braked castors. The operator pushes the crane into position by hand and locks the wheels; lifting is then carried out by a 380V three-phase electric chain hoist travelling along the top beam. Because the crane carries the load path down to the floor through its own legs, no anchoring or structural work is needed.

What is a portable gantry crane used for?

Typical applications are production and assembly lines, warehouse and logistics areas, maintenance workshops, construction sites, and small shipyards or yacht workshops. It is used for part assembly, die changes, motor and pump removal, and temporary loading and unloading tasks.

Is an aluminium gantry crane better than a steel one?

It depends on how often the crane is moved. The ALUBKB aluminium version is considerably lighter, so a single operator can reposition it with little effort — the better choice when the crane changes location frequently. The BKB steel version offers higher capacity and rigidity for heavier, more static duty. BM Makina manufactures both.

      What lifting capacity is available?

BKB / ALUBKB portable gantry cranes are produced from 125 kg up to 1,000 kg (1 tonne) as standard, in a single-girder I-beam configuration. Capacity is engineered around span, lifting height, duty cycle and load type. For requirements above 1 tonne, BM Makina’s light overhead (bridge) crane systems are the appropriate solution.

How much does a portable gantry crane cost?

The price depends on the configuration. The main cost drivers are lifting capacity, span between the legs, lifting height, fixed or telescopic height adjustment, the top-beam profile, hoist speed and control type (two-speed or inverter), and options such as radio remote control, cable reel and galvanised finish. BM Makina prepares a project-specific quotation based on your requirements.

Can the height and span be adjusted?

Yes. Telescopic models allow the lifting height to be changed on site, and the span between the legs is specified per project. A single adjustable crane can therefore serve several different working areas instead of being fixed to one layout.

What is the difference between a gantry crane and a jib crane?

A jib crane is fixed to a wall or to a floor-mounted pillar and covers a circular area by slewing. A gantry crane stands free on its own legs, covers a rectangular working area and can be relocated. Choose a jib crane for a permanent workstation; choose a portable gantry crane when the lifting point changes.

Does a portable gantry crane need floor anchoring or a runway?

No. BKB / ALUBKB portable gantry cranes operate on any flat, load-bearing floor without anchoring. The castors are braked and lock during lifting. No runway, ceiling beam or structural modification is required, which also makes them suitable for leased facilities.

      Is an electric hoist included?

Yes. The standard configuration includes a 380V three-phase electric chain hoist with two-speed or inverter-controlled operation, supplied with a pendant control. Radio remote control, inverter speed control and a cable reel are available as options.

How is the crane delivered and installed?

The process begins with a requirement analysis and, where needed, a site survey. Once capacity, span and height are defined, the system is manufactured at BM Makina’s facility in Gebze, Türkiye. The modular structure allows quick plug-and-play assembly on site, and the crane is load-tested before hand-over.

Which standards are these cranes built to?

BM Makina manufactures the BKB / ALUBKB series at its facility in Gebze, Türkiye, in accordance with EN and CE standards. Every unit passes load testing and quality control before delivery, and is supplied with its technical documentation.
