HISTORIC BEYOĞLU TUNNEL
POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PROJECT

Year: 2005
Company: İETT
Product Group: VAHLE
Location: Istanbul – Beyoğlu
Project Duration: 6 months

Historic Beyoğlu Tunnel Power Transmission System (from 2005 to Today)

BM Makina modernized the power transmission infrastructure of the historic funicular line running between Karaköy and Beyoğlu with VAHLE Insulated Conductor Rail Systems. The conductor rails installed along the tunnel are supported by ceiling-anchored steel support structures, providing uninterrupted power to the cars. As part of the infrastructure, control and distribution panels, emergency lighting, fire detection and communication systems were integrated to current safety standards. The track superstructure was renewed with concrete sleepers to a single-track (1435 mm) standard, increasing line reliability.

As VAHLE’s Türkiye representative, BM Makina undertook the supply, installation and commissioning of the conductor rail power system; the project was commissioned in 2005, and the system modernization was completed during a comprehensive restoration in 2007 (about 4 months). The Insulated Conductor Rail Systems offer a high current-capacity solution in the 220–2360 A range while combining safety, continuity and low maintenance needs in enclosed tunnel conditions. Sustainable operation was supported by the 2018 and 2024 maintenance periods, and the line continues to run safely today with BM Makina’s technical expertise.
