Diesel-to-Electric RTG Transition Project at Mardaş Port

In 2011, at Mardaş Container Port, BM Makina realized one of Türkiye’s first eRTG (electric RTG crane) conversion projects, converting diesel-powered RTG cranes to a grid-fed electric system. In a short period of about three months, a complete power transmission infrastructure was built with VAHLE insulated conductor rail systems, BM Makina-manufactured steel structures and current-collector trolleys integrated onto the RTG cranes. As a result, the cranes were able to operate continuously on grid power along their travel runway, without using a diesel generator.

With this conversion, diesel fuel consumption per RTG at Mardaş Port fell by up to 90%, engine-maintenance and generator-repair costs dropped dramatically, and the investment paid for itself in about two years. Taking the diesel engines out of operation both improved air quality at the port by bringing emissions close to zero and significantly reduced noise levels. The Mardaş eRTG Project, in which BM Makina undertook end to end the design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning, has become one of the exemplary references of the “green port” approach with its energy efficiency, ease of maintenance and environmental gains.
