What is Double Layer Winding, and What Does It Deliver? While classic single layer (monospiral) drums wind the cable in one layer, KATO MKT Double Layer drums wind it in two side-by-side integrated pulley rows. As a result: longer cable runs are stored at the same drum diameter, and thicker, heavier cables are managed safely. The double layer design solves cable reeling needs of cranes, gantries, port equipment and long-travel electric machinery in one compact body.
The BM Makina KATO MKT Double Layer Cable Reeling Drum is a motor driven cable management system designed to wind long-distance, large cross-section power cables safely, under control and automatically, thanks to its double-layer drum structure. A member of the KATO family developed since 2009, this model is the ideal choice for heavy industry, ports, mining and electric construction machinery requiring high cable capacity.
Technical Structure and Working Principle — Drive system: brake asynchronous motor + magnetic coupling + gearbox + slip ring. The magnetic coupling keeps cable tension controlled and slips on sudden loads to protect cable and drivetrain; the brake locks the drum when power is lost, preventing uncontrolled pay-out. Double layer drum body: heavy-duty steel, wide winding surface, high cable volume; hot-dip galvanized or industrial epoxy/acrylic paint for long outdoor life in ports, mines and steel plants. Slip ring unit: transmits power and control signals continuously while the drum rotates; with various pole counts and current/voltage combinations, 3-phase+PE supply (pole count extendable on request), control signals and sensor/encoder/data cables run through the same drum. Guiding and winding control: an optional mechanical level wind system winds the cable layer by layer, evenly left-to-right — reducing overlap and knotting risks even on long cable runs, for tidy winding, long cable life and safe operation.
