Description

BM Makina KATO YKT Spring Cable Reel
(Automatic Spring-Driven Cable Management System)

  • BM Makina KATO YKT Spring Cable Reels — spring driven cable reels — are cable management systems that automatically retract the power and control cables of mobile machinery using spring force. The strong spiral spring inside the drum rewinds the cable after use, which: prevents the cable from dragging, tangling and getting damaged on the floor
  • keeps the work area tidy and improves occupational safety
  • and extends cable life while lowering maintenance costs. With a steel body, high protection class (IP55) design, uninterrupted power and signal transmission via slip ring and spring-driven automatic winding, the KATO YKT series is a domestic, durable and economical solution for cranes, construction machinery, in-plant mobile systems, railway and port applications

Key Features

Spring-driven automatic winding: the internal spiral spring rewinds the cable after pay-out with no manual effort — the cable stays under controlled tension and never drags. Uninterrupted power and data via slip ring: power and control signals flow continuously while the drum rotates; 4A–200A current options and multi-contact ring choices carry both power and signal lines safely. Heavy-duty body, high IP protection: sheet steel body, hot-dip galvanized or industrially painted; IP55 options run reliably in dusty, humid, outdoor and heavy industrial conditions. Versatile mounting: wall, ceiling or floor; horizontal or vertical axis; 360° rotating designs let the cable wind neatly toward the pull direction, reducing kink and bending stress. Cable guiding and tidy winding: on wide drums the layers wind evenly without piling to one side, minimizing cable breakage and wear for long service life. Long-life spring mechanism: high-elasticity spring steels give long service; when maintenance is due, spring replacement and adjustment can be done even in the field thanks to the modular structure. Wide model and cable range: sizes cover light short-cable duties (10–15 m) up to heavy-duty types (40–60 m) across cable cross-sections, weights and current needs; above 60 m, BM Makina offers combined engineering with KATO motorized (MKT) drums.

Applications

Cranes and lifting systems — gantry cranes, overhead/travelling cranes, port container cranes, shipbuilding cranes, magnet cranes → safe reeling of power and pendant cables on moving cranes. Construction machinery — electric excavators, forklifts, platforms, concrete pumps, tunnel boring machines → cable-clutter-free power supply on electrified machinery. In-plant energy & data — assembly lines, conveyors, robotic arms, automated storage systems → tidy cable feeding for motors, sensors, cameras and devices on moving equipment. Mining, steel and heavy industry — drilling rigs, crusher plants, foundries and steel plants → high-protection power and signal cable reeling in dusty, harsh conditions. Railway, port and infrastructure — railway maintenance vehicles, depot workshops, rail-mounted machines, port equipment → cable management and safe power distribution for mobile maintenance systems. Other mobile and stage applications — airport ground vehicles, fire platforms, mobile lighting towers, stage & theatre platforms → compact, safe, tidy cable solutions on mobile systems.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spring cable reel and how does it work?

A spring cable reel — also called a spring driven cable reel — winds the cable of a moving machine back onto the drum using an internal spiral spring. Pulling the cable tensions the spring; when the machine returns, the spring rewinds the cable under controlled tension. No electrical drive is required.

Spring cable reel or motorized cable reel — which one should I choose?

For short and medium travel distances at moderate speed, a spring cable reel (YKT) is sufficient and more economical. Long travel, heavy cable cross-sections or high travel speeds call for a motorized cable reel (MKT). Cable weight, travel length and machine speed decide the selection.

How are power and signals transmitted while the drum rotates?

Transmission runs through a slip ring assembly, so power and control signals are not interrupted while the drum turns. KATO YKT reels offer current ratings from 4 A to 200 A and multi-contact slip ring options, allowing power and signal circuits on the same reel.

In which ambient conditions can the reel operate?

The steel body is protected by hot-dip galvanising or industrial coating, and IP55 versions work in dusty, humid, outdoor and heavy-industry conditions. Reels can be mounted on a wall, ceiling or floor, in horizontal or vertical axis, with 360° orientation options.

Do I need a cable guide with the reel?

On wide drums and long travel distances a cable guide keeps the layers even and prevents the cable from piling on one side, which reduces bending and crushing damage and extends cable life. BM Makina supplies KATO cable guides and feed guides as part of the system.

Which industries use spring driven cable reels?

Cranes and crane runways, construction and mining machinery, mobile equipment inside factories, railway maintenance depots, ports and shipyards are the main applications, including projects where diesel machinery is converted to electric drive.

Can reels be manufactured to project-specific dimensions?

Yes. KATO reels are manufactured at our facility in Gebze, Türkiye and are calculated for the specific cable cross-section, travel length, current rating and mounting orientation of each project.
